The Helicopter Crash Explained
On April 26th, New York State Police admitted that a Mercy Flight helicopter had crashed somewhere in Genesee County. Unfortunately, this crash proved to be fatal, as both occupants lost their lives. Although this was a medical helicopter, there were no patients on board at the time of the crash. That said, the families of two 60-year-old pilots are now mourning the loss of their loved ones. Apparently, they were conducting some kind of training exercise, although it is not clear what exactly went wrong.
Immediately, all future Mercy Flight helicopter operations were suspended while authorities conducted a full investigation into the matter. However, there is some evidence to suggest that the rotors may have become entangled with power lines at some point, as there were downed power lines near the crash site. Other witnesses state that they heard a “boom” of some kind prior to the crash.
The specific type of helicopter was a Bell 429. Although this helicopter is seen as modern and was updated within the last decade, it is not without its fair share of issues. A police department in Nigeria recently experienced some kind of mechanical issue with the same type of helicopter in January of 2022. In 2020, seven police officers were injured in the Philippines when a Bell 429 helicopter crashed. Another pilot was killed when a Bell 429 helicopter crashed in Eden, North Carolina, in 2021.
