Officials say that the driver of the tourist bus ran a red light prior to the collision, and it is assumed that this violation led directly to the crash. The authorities stated that the driver of the bus is expected to receive a summons.
The tour bus collided with an MTA bus in the intersection, and this second bus was also carrying passengers who were apparently injured. In a sense, this created a “perfect storm” as far as bus accidents go. Buses carry more passengers than other vehicles, so there is much higher potential for numerous injuries. Transit president Richard Davey reported that occupants of the tour bus noticed the driver acting “erratically” prior to the crash.
