Tour Bus Runs Red Light, Causing Numerous Injuries in New York

Tour buses in New York are quite popular – providing tourists with an easy way to get around the city, see landmarks, and get a sense of the metropolis without spending too much time on foot. Many tourists who choose tour buses are elderly or frail, and they may be unable to walk long distances. For these individuals, a tour bus seems like an obvious choice to reduce physical strain. But as a recent bus crash in New York highlights, these vehicles are also capable of causing serious injuries to innocent people.

Double-Decker Bus Causes Almost 50 Injuries

On July 6th, it was reported that a double-decker tourist bus had crashed into a second bus in Manhattan, causing a total of 46 injuries. Of these injured victims, 36 had to be hospitalized. A further 10 were treated at the scene and released with ostensibly minor injuries. Fortunately, none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. The cause of the crash was concerning, however. Officials say that the driver of the tourist bus ran a red light prior to the collision, and it is assumed that this violation led directly to the crash. The authorities stated that the driver of the bus is expected to receive a summons.

The tour bus collided with an MTA bus in the intersection, and this second bus was also carrying passengers who were apparently injured. In a sense, this created a “perfect storm” as far as bus accidents go. Buses carry more passengers than other vehicles, so there is much higher potential for numerous injuries. Transit president Richard Davey reported that occupants of the tour bus noticed the driver acting “erratically” prior to the crash.

This comes just weeks after a tragic bus accident in Canada that killed 15 people. Most of the victims were seniors. Crashes such as these highlight major safety issues with buses across North America.

Can You File an Injury Claim after a Bus Accident in New York?

If you have been injured in a bus accident, you have various options to pursue compensation for your damages. The obvious route is to sue the company behind the bus service. If you were injured by an MTA bus accident, you can sue the New York transit organization. If you were injured by a private bus company such as a tour organization, you can sue the company directly. Both options should provide compensation, as these companies are insured against personal injury lawsuits. A personal injury lawsuit can provide compensation for medical treatment, emotional distress, missed wages, and much more.
